Rosin is the solid residue left after a resin has been distilled to yield the essential oil or spirits of turpentine; it is a very poor material and should not be used for oil painting. WebbShake the Oil of Turpentine thoroughly with an equal volume of Solution of Sodium Hydroxide, and introduce the mixture into a copper still connected with a well-cooled condenser. Recover about three-fourths of the Oil by distillation, separate the clear Oil from the water, and filter.
