When its just a normal honed blade a couple pounds pull and a light stropping action are perfect. I have an old horsehide strop that has seen plenty of action over it's long life, and still does a fine job. Ultra-smooth finish on the horsehide side. I still rub the strop down (out of habit) before each use.
